This week, we share a story from Michigan.
First grade teacher Julia Koch was teaching her virtual class when she got a call from a grandparent who was having technical difficulties getting her grandchildren’s tablets signed in for the class. The teacher immediately noticed something was wrong with the way Cynthia Phillips was speaking. Julia said that Cynthia didn’t sound like herself – her words were jumbled and she wasn’t coherent. That’s when Mrs. Koch yelled for her principal Charlie Lovelady.
Mr. Lovelady got on the phone with the grandmother and having had his own father suffer from a stroke, he recognized that she was displaying all the same symptoms. He immediately called 911 to go to her house. Mr. Lovelady then told her to remain calm and that help was on the way.
As it turned out, Cynthia was in fact having a stroke. She is now recovering in the hospital. She said that she can’t thank the principal and Ms. Koch for their quick thinking which saved her life.

Wow… you talk about a team of people coming together to look out after one another! That is a strong community and goes to show you that great teachers go so far beyond just teaching our children. In such unprecedented times, its good to see how people have adjusted and are there for each other.
So, this week our ACC Heroes are Ms, Koch and Mr. Lovelady at Edgewood Elementary School in Michigan. Great job!
