This week's question is from Brittany who emailed us and asked…
Hey Kix,
I was wondering how you got your start in music and when you became a country singer. Any advice for someone like me who is just starting out?
Thanks, Kix!
Signed,
Brittany

Thanks for your email, Brittany!
I guess it would depend on what you would consider being in the music business. My first paying gig was in a garage when I was 12 – made five bucks… Okay, I didn’t make five bucks, the band made five bucks and there were five of us, so you do the math.
I know you're probably meaning the Nashville part of my career… An old friend of mine was working for Charlie Daniels’ publishing company back in the 80’s and he encouraged me to come to Nashville and write songs.
I came to town and swept floors and did anything else I could to make a buck and played at any place that would let me. One night, at the famous Bluebird Cafe, a guy named Bob Doyle, who later became Garth Brooks' manager, saw me play and liked my songs and got me a writer deal. I wrote some hits and made a living writing songs for about ten years. Then, I met Ronnie Dunn and got around to singing some of them…
My advice for starting out is: you've got to love what you do and patience is your greatest asset – it doesn't come easy for anyone!
Good luck, Brittany, and thanks for your question!
